Are you ready? Now is the time to start thinking about post graduation plans. In October, the guidance counselor visited all junior classrooms and discussed what students should be doing in preparation for their senior year. PSAT scores have been distributed. Juniors should review their results in preparation for the SAT. The PSAT is a good indicator of SAT performance. There are also several resources available to students who took the PSAT. My College QuickStart is an online personalized college and career planning kit available free of charge to all students who took the PSAT. Students can create a customized SAT study plan, review test questions and search for colleges. Now is the time to start your college search (if you haven t already begun) and visit college campuses. By the end of this summer juniors should have their college choices narrowed down to 4-6 institutions and be ready to apply in the fall of their senior year. If you are planning on joining the armed services, research the different branches and meet with a recruiter for assistance in making an informed decision. For students considering directly entering the workforce after graduation, research different companies, occupations and necessary skills. Consider furthering your education or acquiring job related skills to become more marketable. Mr. Bilinski, the career counselor, is also available to provide assistance with any career related questions. He is located in room A157. The following websites may be helpful in planning for your future: whatwilltheylearn.com careeronestop.org careervoyages.gov joblink.delaware.gov Senior Year is Almost Here! January 2010 Advanced Placement courses give you the opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school. Taking the AP exam sends a powerful message to colleges and universities that you re ready and can enable you to gain admission, college credit and placement into advanced courses. AP exam registration information has been mailed home to all juniors currently taking an AP course. Students with question should see their guidance counselor. Additional information on Advanced Placement can be found at: collegeboard.com. Deciding on what college to attend is a major step and can be challenging at times. There are several factors to consider when choosing a college. Students should ask themselves the following questions: Why do I want to go to college? What are my career goals? What kind of school do I want to attend? What is most important to me? How do I learn best? The next step is to consider location (distance from home and proximity to resources), environment (size of school and setting), type of school (public vs private, religious affiliation, etc.), admissions requirements, quality (retention rate and graduation rates), academic programs (majors, class size and student-faculty ratio), expenses (application fee, tuition, room & board, books and transportation), financial aid (tuition payment plans, percentage of students receiving aid). Students are welcome to see their guidance counselor for assistance. Any junior planning to attend a 4 yr college/university should take the SAT or ACT. All juniors are encouraged to take the SAT at least twice during their junior year. Not sure which test to take? 99% of colleges/universities accept the SAT or ACT. Be sure to check with the specific college you are interested in to determine if they have a preference. The SAT measures the skills you have learned in and outside the classroom and how well you can apply that knowledge. It tests how you think, solve problems, and communicate. There are three sections: critical reading, mathematics and writing. Each section is 200-800 points with a combined possible score of 2400. The tests is 3 hours and 45 minutes. There is a penalty for wrong answers and students are discouraged from guessing. The ACT measures what students have learned in high school. There are five sections: English, Math Reading, Science and Writing. The Writing section is optional. Each section is worth 1-36 points and 36 is the highest possible composite score. The test is 3 hours and 42 minutes. There is no penalty for wrong answers and students are encouraged to answer every question. To obtain additional information or to register online for the SAT or ACT, visit: collegeboard.com and actstudent.org. Registration forms for both the SAT and ACT are available in guidance. The New Castle County Public Library now offers ePrep. ePrep is a free online test preparation program for the SAT, ACT and PSAT. For additional information or to access ePrep, visit the New Castle County Public Library s website: www2.nccde.org/libraries/Databases/Default.aspx Choosing a major is one of the most important steps you will take in your college journey. The following factors should be considered: What high school subjects do I enjoy? What comes easy or natural for me? Examination or assessment of interests. What types of jobs or careers appeal to you? Examine your abilities and strengths. Determine what you value in work: working alone or with groups, having a positive impact on others, stability, etc. Career exploration Career cruising is an excellent tool to assist with answering these questions. The guidance department receives information on various scholarships throughout the course of the school year. This information is posted on the school website (appohigh.org) and on the announcements. When applying for scholarships, students should pay close attention to whether or not the scholarship is renewable. If a scholarship is not renewable, students will need to keep this in mind when considering paying for college the following school year. Be aware of companies offering to find scholarships for a fee. Many times you can do the same research yourself for free. During senior year, after January 1st, students may apply for financial aid by filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA will help determine eligibility for federal student financial aid such as : Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, PLUS Loans and work-study programs). This form is also used to award non-federal aid. For additional information or to get an early estimate of eligibility for federal student aid, visit: fafsa.ed.gov. The Delaware SEED Scholarship provides tuition at Del Tech & the University of DE Associate in Arts program for students who have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 & enroll full time no later than the fall immediately following graduation. For additional scholarship information, visit the websites below: collegeboard.com fastweb.com scholarships.com educationplanner.com doe.k12.de.us/dhec The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is a nonprofit organization that serves as the athletics governing body for more than 1,300 colleges and universities. If you are a junior and plan to participate in NCAA Division I or II athletics at a college/university, you must be certified as an amateur student athlete. The NCAA Eligibility Center will certify the academic credentials of all college-bound student athletes. To qualify for participation or receive an athletic scholarship, you must complete 16 core courses, earn a minimum required grade point average and earn a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches your core-course grade point average and test score sliding scale (i.e. A 2.4 core course grade point average needs an 860 SAT score). For additional information regarding eligibility or to register visit: eligibilitycenter.org. State Offered Financial Aid Programs Scholarships NCAA Clearinghouse Did you know that the state of Delaware offers several financial aid programs for students graduating from a high school in Delaware? Academic Memorial Scholarship: students enrolling at Delaware State University or University of Delaware Professional Incentive Loan Programs: students pursuing teaching or nursing degrees. Academic Merit Scholarships: students enrolling at any regionally accredited, nonprofit college. Another program available to Delaware residents is the Academic Common Market. If a program of study is not offered at Delaware State University or the University of Delaware, a student may be eligible for in-state tuition at a public college in the 16 southern states that participate. Eligibility requirements and application deadlines can be found by clicking on the Financial Aid link on the homepage at: doe.k12.de.us/dhec. A question and answer session is a good way to quickly capture the attention of readers. You can either compile questions that you ve received since the last edition or you can summarize some generic questions that are frequently asked about your organization. A listing of names and titles of managers in your organization is a good way to give your newsletter a personal touch. If your organization is small, you may want to list the names of all employees. If you have any prices of standard products or services, you can include a listing of those here. You may want to refer your readers to any other forms of communication that you ve created for your organization. You can also use this space to remind readers to mark their calendars for a regular event, such as a breakfast meeting for vendors every third Tuesday of the month, or a biannual charity auction.
